    Teach your child resilience online

Resilience is a word that I've heard a lot of over the last 18 months. You might remember that my middle daughter Miss J suffered a terrible time at school and was bullied which really affected her mental health and confidence. Now we have removed her from the school and she is very happy we are working on building her self confidence and resilience back up.

Role Models is an online site which offers life skills courses for children and their parents. During the coronavirus lockdown they are offering their courses online via Zoom and we tried out their online resilience course. Aimed at children aged 8-11 it's goal is to teach children how to face challenges, handle mistakes, deal with adversity and thrive in an ever changing world. At the moment where we have all been thrown up in the air and had to deal with a very altered reality, I couldn't think of a better course to put my children on.

We were sent a link to register to use Zoom which is straightforward to set up. Miss J hadn't used it before but very quickly got to grips with the platform. If any of the children had connection issues they would work to address this at the beginning so that they didn't miss out on anything. The classes were small, I think about 6 children in total and then the role model (teacher) so they all got plenty of attention and Miss J felt very comfortable talking to them all.

They started off by playing ice breaker games and I got the impression that it was a very relaxed environment, Miss J certainly was very happy taking part and looked forward to her session every evening. In fact she was very happy for me to leave her to it whilst she was taking part so I would just pop my head in and out to check she was doing ok.

The sessions were 90 minutes long, which seems like a long time but I think that they were set up in such a way so as to be fun that Miss J had no problems concentrating for the whole time. In fact, she was very engaged and learnt a lot. At the end of every session we had an email from the role model who led the sessions explaining what they had covered and learnt about and giving us a little something extra to work on at home. Miss J was able to tell me exactly what they had learnt and really understood it which was fantastic.

Over the course of the week they covered the importance of a growth mindset, working within a 'challenge zone' and why it's great to make mistakes amongst other things. They were all lessons that we can put into daily practice at home to increase her confidence and improve the way she approaches situations.

The course cost £225 for 5, 90 minute group sessions which I think is great value. At the moment they have a 20% discount code off some online courses too. I wouldn't hesitate to book my children onto another course with Role Models, I'm already thinking about the next one that we will do!
