    • Go on a family road trip.
    • Stay at home and play some games.
    • Explore your local city.
    • Have fun at the park.

Whether you have kids who are barely toddlers or kids who are grumpy teenagers, it can be hard to think of fun things to do for the whole family. Everybody has their own idea of "fun". What you do know, of course, is that you want the whole family to do more together. Plenty of families find themselves in that situation. It's a sign of the times, in many ways. We lead busy and productive modern lives. The adults and the kids get home from work and school, and everybody plays on their phones or watches TV . It's easy to feel as if your family is too busy to spend time together, but you can change that. What could you and your family do to relax this weekend?

Go on a family road trip.

A great idea for a fun family weekend is to go on a road trip. If you can't agree on one thing to do as a family, then a road trip would give you the opportunity to do many things. Everybody in the family could suggest something they want to see or do. Then, you could plan your route to ensure that you get to stop at all of the destinations that people had in mind. This will keep everyone happy. Plus, it's an excuse to go on multiple adventures. Who says that you have to wait for a school break to go on holiday? You can take a mini-trip at any time of year. Weekends must be designed for that purpose, surely.

Of course, the beauty of a road trip is the journey itself. You'll all be able to bond during the trip from place to place. Who doesn't love a motivational playlist whilst they're cruising along the open road? And you'll have to get some snacks for the journey, too. Tasty food for a trip is always a necessity. You'll want to make sure you're prepared for unexpected events, of course. Make sure you've planned alternate routes in case there are road closures. And bring a spare tyre if it's going to be a long trip; you don't want a breakdown to ruin a great holiday.

Stay at home and play some games.

As fun as the suggestion in the first point may sound, you might not want to go on big adventures very often. You might be looking for suggestions to help the family reconnect on a more regular basis. Well, there's actually nothing wrong with spending the weekend at home. Maybe you should just try to encourage your family members to spend that time together. If your children want to play video games, then why not play video games with them? That's why fun consoles such as the Nintendo Switch exist. Families can use technology to bond rather than spend time alone. Of course, good old fashioned board games can work, too. Everybody loves Monopoly once they get into it. Obviously, you'll have to make sure people don't get too into it; that's how arguments start.

Perhaps you could play some games in the garden, too. If it's a pleasant day, you could play some sports. All you need is a football and a few jumpers for goalposts. Helping your kids to stay active and enjoy the simpler things in life might be good for them. And it might be good for any adults in your family to lead a more active lifestyle, as well. You could even bond by getting into gardening together. That might not be a garden "game", but the point is that staying at home can be fun, nonetheless. Growing fresh fruit and vegetables in the garden could become a game, of course. You could have a competition over the following weeks to see whose produce grows the quickest.

    Explore your local city.

Another way to relax with your family at the weekend would be to explore your local city. Or perhaps you could explore a local town if you've already explored your city extensively. The point is that you should seize the opportunity to experience new things. You and your family probably enjoy going on holiday to foreign places so you can learn things about different cultures. But there might be a lot to learn on your doorstep. As mentioned in the first point, you can take an adventure at the weekend if you approach it in the right way. A short road trip or a day out in the city can become as exciting as a trip abroad if you frame it in the right way.

You might want to do some research on family-friendly holidays in your area. You might be able to find great deals on city breaks if you book in advance. Do your research. It doesn't even have to be the nearest city to you. You could search for interesting destinations slightly further away, for example, Norfolk is a great place for a family holiday.  If you take the suggestion from the initial point in this article, you could turn it into a proper road trip. The point is that you don't have to wait for summer to go on a fun holiday. You can take a break at the weekend. It's a chance to make memories with your loved ones and explore new places. So, start looking for opportunities to go on adventures closer to home.

If you're on holiday and just want a day off from the go, go, go of rigorous activities, you can find something that takes things down a gear or two. It would be irresponsible as a family of travellers to miss out on places like the Oranjezicht Market during your next family holiday. Rather than spend an entire day, you can go at your own pace because everyone needs the chance to recharge so they can make the most of the rest of the trip.

    Have fun at the park.

You and your family could also relax this weekend by having fun at the park. As many of the suggestions in this article should have made clear, you don't need to go on an expensive or extravagant trip to have a fun time with your loved ones. Sometimes, going to the park and simply throwing a frisbee around can be a great way to unwind and enjoy the basic things in life. Bring a few tennis rackets and tennis balls with you to have a tournament. Or fashion some flags out of paper (you could even use jackets if you decide to be spontaneous) and have a game of Capture the Flag. That could be a fun team-based game to play in an open space such as the park.
