Best places to stay in Wales for couples
When it comes to Valentine's day, many people love to celebrate it with that special someone in their lives. While we all don’t need the one day to serve as a reminder to tell someone that we love them, it can be a lovely day to look forward to.It’s nice to plan special treats and show someone you care, and a great way to celebrate Valentine’s day is to head away for the weekend or romantic one night breaks, there are plenty of romantic places in Wales to choose from. Read on to find out more about some great places to visit in Wales for couples, you're sure to find the perfect place on this list.
Portmeirion
Portmeirion is an enchanting village in North Wales that was designed to replicate an Italian village. Here you will see pastel shade and colour everywhere you turn, making it a unique place to visit for a weekend away. It is a beautiful place where you really feel like you have escaped the bustle of everyday life. There is a hotel or you can look at self-catering cottages or a guest house with private bathroom close by. It also benefits being on the peninsula of the coast, you also get the added bonus of being by the sea. Everything within Portmeirion is within easy reach and it is truly one of the most beautiful places I have seen - we had a lovely holiday there some years ago.
Barafundle Bay, Stackpole
If you were hoping to visit one of the most stunning coastal areas of Wales then head to Barafundle Bay in Stackpole. Thai beach is remote and is part of the Stackpole Estate which is managed by the National Trust. It is the ideal spot for couples to enjoy the beach if they were hoping for a little more privacy. Enjoy a picnic and a stroll along the white sands while listening to the waves gently crash in. Stackpole itself is a lovely village with lots to see and do, but the sandy beaches will be the main focal point of your visit for sure.
Cardiff
We can’t discuss romantic weekend breaks in Wales without mentioning the capital of Wales, Cardiff. This is a bustling city that is a great location for couples with plenty of attractions just a short walk away in the city centre. There are lots of shops, bars, and restaurants to explore as well as some of the most luxurious hotels that Wales has on offer, many with a swimming pool and everything you need within walking distance. Cardiff also has a harbour front where there is a vibrant nightlife scene. Ideal for couples who like to be entertained and a great place for date ideas in South Wales. It's also got great transport links so is a great base for travelling to other parts of Wales.
Snowdonia
Another beautiful location in North Wales is Snowdonia. Famous for Snowdon and people making that big walk to the summit, in the surrounding areas of the Snowdonia National Park you also have beautiful lakes and other picturesque scenery to enjoy. Whether you want to enjoy a glamping pod, log cabin with a wood burner or a cosy B&B Snowdonia has a lot to offer a couple who like to enjoy the great outdoors. You could definitely enjoy a romantic affordable weekend getaway here, and just enjoy the tranquility of nature.
Abereiddy
Abereiddy is a hamlet in the Pembrokeshire region of west Wales that is a lovely quaint area to visit as a couple. The beach is stunning and well worth visiting but many people come here to visit The Blue Lagoon. The beach itself is a little more unusual than most as it is pebble and black sand. While it is a beautiful place to explore, Abereiddy beach on the Pembrokeshire coast does have strong currents so it may be more of a location to relax on the shore rather than in the crystal blue waters. This is a popular location for coasteering and cliff climbing so would definitely suit a more adventurous couple wanting a couples getaway in Wales.
Llanddwyn Island
If you are looking for an ultimate romantic location then look no further than Llanddwyn Island. It is said to be the final resting place of St Dwynwen who was the welsh patron saint of lovers. What a perfect romantic place for Valentines day! It is a small tidal island off the west coast of Anglesey and a very rural location so you will likely stay in Anglesey - look for a cosy cottage or delightful barn conversion for a romantic place to stay. Anglesey is a great location to explore anyway, but while you are there you have to visit Llanddwyn Island. Enjoy a picnic on a beach. Explore the island and enjoy the idyllic surroundings in this perfect spot.
Criccieth
Criccieth is a friendly seaside town that gives you everything you might want from a romantic getaway. A quiet town with lovely atmospheric places to eat and drink, a beautiful coastline to explore, and lots of gorgeous countrysides perfect for long walks. It is the ultimate place to recharge the batteries and reconnect as a couple. This area is also rich in history so no visit would be complete without heading to Criccieth Castle, a short drive away. It proudly sits high on the headland looking out to see and can give off some of the best views in the area. Proposing to your significant other with a view like this would be the ultimate romantic idea for Valentine's day!
Laugharne
Heading south and a less tourist location in the area but one not to miss is Laugharne. It is a town most famously associated with the poet Dylan Thomas which makes it one of the must see places in Wales to visit in any event. Here you can get some beautiful views of the estuary. In the town itself, you have shops and restaurants with lots of self-catering accommodation options. Perfect as a little bolthole for romantic breaks in Wales.
Brecon Beacons
The Brecon Beacons span a huge part of mid wales and are home to some simply beautiful scenery. If you are an outdoors sort of couple this is the perfect location as there are lots of walks in this area as well as back to nature activities such as fishing, water sports and caving. The Brecon Beacons were the first classified Dark Sky Reserve in Wales and therefore it is a great place for stargazing - what could be more romantic? Head for the Usk Reservoir, Hay Bluff and the Brecon Beacons National Park Visitor Centre for the best spots. The only problem about visiting here for a short break is that there is so much to do and see that you will run out of time and want to come back!
Anglesey
Finally, in North Wales, you have the island of Anglesey. It is such a lovely part of Wales and has plenty of little villages within it. The island is small in size, so it is easy to explore the rugged landscape within a weekend and there are plenty of romantic holiday cottages to choose from. Head to the village of Benllech to enjoy fish and chips and a stroll along the popular Red Dwarf Bay, or head to Beaumaris castle and enjoy walking and exploring. There is so much to do here that it can be a great way to reconnect as a couple, in beautiful surroundings, enjoying some of the simpler things in life. Arguably one of the best places to stay in Wales for couples, treat yourself to luxury accommodation, maybe with a private hot tub for your weekend away. What more can you ask for?
