We've been in and out of lockdown for months now, unable to get out and about as much as we normally would. Working from home has meant less walking on the commute too, added to that, the fact that gyms and leisure facilities aren't open as usual makes it really hard to keep fit at the moment. With new year approaching I am determined to loose the lockdown weight and keep myself fit and healthy ready for whatever 2021 has to throw at us! Keeping fit at home requires a little more thought but it can be done really easily, read on if you want to know more about how to keep fit at home.
Yoga
One of my favourite forms of exercise is yoga. I love that it's free and you can do it from the warmth of your own home in the winter or outside if the weather is better. You don't really need anything except for a decent yoga mat. There are lots of great guided yoga videos on YouTube so you'll be able to find something for your ability. It is a great exercise for both your body and mind.
Running
Running is another great free activity, all you really need is a quality pair of running trainers. I am trying to get into running again, I love the headspace that it gives you and the great feeling you have when you are finished. It's a great cardiovascular exercise and perfect for if you are looking to loose weight and look after your heart. If you are new to running take a look at the free Couch to 5k app, if you start now you could be running 5k in as little as 9 weeks.
Cleaning
Normal activities around the house can contribute to keeping you fit. Vacuuming burns on average 175 calories an hour! So if you spend an hour vigorously cleaning your house that could be equivalent to a 20 minute run - and you have the added benefit of a clean house at the end of it!
Walking
Walking is good for the soul and has been one of my saviours during lockdowns. If lockdown rules allow it you can meet with a friend to walk the dog and have a good catch up along the way. Choose a hilly route to make it a more difficult walk - ideally uphill on the way there and downhill on the way back!
HIIT workouts
If you are really feeling energetic and want a whole body work out try a HIIT routine. Again, there are lots of routines available for free on YouTube suitable for all levels from beginner to advanced. They are great for burning body fat and improving cardiovascular health. 30 minutes three times a week will really make a difference too.
