Top Tips For Visiting Canada With Children
Canada is right up there at the top of my bucket list for places that I want to visit. I’ve heard so many great things about Canada and so many friends have told me about their perfect family holidays to Canada that I really want to get in on a piece of that action!
We’d like to visit within the next couple of years so I have been doing my research into some tips for visiting Canada with children and I thought that I would share them with you.
Pack outdoors gear
The chances are that if you are visiting Canada with children it is because you want to spend some time in the beautiful outdoors there. Make sure that you pack for any activities that you might want to take part in, be that wood walks, lake walks, ice skating or skiing, you can do it all there and it’s best to be prepared.
Eat out Canadian style
One of the best things about travelling to a new place is exposing your children to new food from a different culture. Typical Canadian food fayre you might want to try includes poutine (chips topped with gravy and cheese), fish and chips, butter tarts, Nanaimo bars and of course anything topped with maple syrup.
Time Your visit
Make sure you visit at the right time of year. This will of course depend upon what you want to do. If winter sports are your thing, the best time to visit for fresh snow is between January and April. The summer brings lots of festivals and can be quite busy which is great if you like crowds and lots of things happening around you but if you prefer to visit when it is quieter then Autumn is a great time, and Canada looks beautiful in autumn colours.
Plan child friendly activities and days out
One of my top tips when it comes to travelling with children anywhere is that you have to have balance between what you would like to see and do and what they would like. There are so many child friendly things to do in Canada that you will be able to fit lots in that you all like. Some of the best child friendly things to see are…
Niagara falls – these breath taking waterfalls are an absolute must see! The children will love seeing them as well as you!
Ripley’s Aquarium – if you are in Toronto, Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada is supposed to be really excellent and well worth a visit. All my children love aquariums so I bet it will be a big hit with children of all ages.
Stanley Park – If you are in Vancouver then Stanley Park has it all. It has a pool, a zoo, a splash park and beaches as well as trails and miles of beautiful walks.
Visit the farm – as you would expect from such an outdoors country there are plenty of farms to visit including Don-O-Ray in Kelowna, Farm Ventures in Roberts Creek and Sugarbush Hill Maple Farm in Huntsville
Consider renting an RV to see more of Canada
Canada really lends itself to being a great road trip destination. You can rent an RV which would be a great way to travel around the country with children at minimal expense. Most places you drive through will have a museum which is a great port of call for learning about the different places you are visiting. You can also camp at many of their national parks which often provides really great scenery and plenty of outdoors activities such as canoeing on lakes, walking, hiking and even just relaxing.
