Accessorising is one of the great joys of getting dressed. Choosing some staple or statement pieces to accentuate your outfit can imbue you with untold confidence and contentment aplenty. However, if you’re new to collecting accessory pieces – particularly of a jewellery persuasion – you might feel a little at-sea as to how to approach it. Seasonality is a big part of the question here, too – are there seasons for jewellery? And how can you approach dressing with them in mind?
Seasonal Jewellery
The seasonality of fashion is inarguable, if not always the most well defined. There are some clear rules we follow for clothes, with winter bringing layers, jumpers, faded colours, hats and boots galore – and the summer inspiring wave after wave of bright, soft, loose and light pieces that both complement the weather and make it comfortable.
As there are seasons for clothes, so too are there seasons for jewellery. However, the rules are much less firm, and more liberties can be taken as a result! Typically, jewellery is given a season according to its colour. Silvers are better at home in the winter, as are darker gemstones such as amethyst and sapphire. Lighter and warmer colours work better in the summer, where golds, rose golds or even brass – which has become particularly popular in the craft jewellery scene.
Choosing a Style
All too often, people will default to shaping their jewellery and accessory choices around their existing clothing or predominant style. This can be hugely limiting, though, whether by keeping you on the look-out for the same items of jewellery each time a season comes around, or by keeping you from experimenting further with your own sense of dress. Rather than this, why not try choosing your accessories first, and building styles from them?
If you have a watch that takes your fancy, with ornamental flourishes and inset gemstones, you might start there and build out something complementary. A light blouse or summer dress could set the watch off against it beautifully, while a casual boot could provide some fun contrast. Conversely, silver rings and a sleek necklace might inspire you to go darker and wintrier, with something deep blue to make the silver shine all the brighter.
Managing Your Collection
Of course, as with any fashion items, your jewellery’s time may come and go. What could you do with your growing jewellery collection as you invest more in your sense of seasonal style? One prevailing option is to sell your jewellery on, to make space for new items and ensure that your style is always changing. You could organise your collection according to what items get the most use, and sell on the ones that don’t get an outing after a year; with certain vendors, you might also be able to buy them back if you change your mind.
Organising your jewellery collection is a smart move anyway, giving you a clear idea of what you have available to you and making outfit inspiration much easier. You could even organise by season! Colour co-ordinating pieces can make a great deal of difference too, making it simpler to put something iconic together without much thought.
