I'm sure that you will all remember that Christmas when the first Hatchimal came out and it was THE present to get and they were sold out everywhere and selling for ridiculous money on eBay?! Well, this year get ahead of the trend and pick up the new Hatchimals Wow ahead of time before they sell out! I'm sure that they are the largest Hatchimals yet! Read on to find out all about how the Hatchimals Wow works.
We were lucky enough to be sent one to try out so I thought I would tell you all about it. The egg comes in a big box with an instruction booklet and inside the egg is an electronic soft toy which is part llama and part unicorn. I found the instruction booklet quite hard to make out (especially when you have excitable children who can't wait to hatch the egg!) so I've re-written the major points of how to work the Hatchimals WOW below.
Disclosure - we were given the Hatchimals Wow free of charge in exchange for this review. All opinions are honest and our own. Read on if you want to know more about how the Hatchimals Wow works. This post also contains affiliate links.

The Hatchimals Wow takes four AA batteries and they come include with batteries so it's ready to play as soon as you take the egg out of the box. Just be careful, in the box packaging is the food for the Hatchimal, my children missed it when they were opening it in their excitement and we had to go back to look for it - just worth noting in the excitement of Christmas day!
Playing with the Hatchimals Wow Egg
Although most of the excitement of the Hatchimals Wow is hatching the egg, you can play with the egg before it hatches! So a key part of knowing how the Hatchimals WOW works is learning how to play with it as an egg. When you take the egg out of the box, undo the plastic locks at the bottom of the egg by twisting them. Your egg is now ready to play with.
The eye colour inside the egg lets you know how to play with the egg. When the egg is quiet you can tap on the egg. The egg will tap back and flash with yellow eyes. If you tap too much the egg will get upset and let you know with red eyes. If you tilt the egg and hold it still it will be comforted and it's eyes will return to yellow.
Tilt the egg backwards and up again to play with it. It will show yellow eyes. If you tilt it too much it will get dizzy and have green eyes. You can hold it upright again to calm it down, it will show yellow eyes again.
You can tilt the egg and hold it there to cuddle it - it will show pink eyes. If you keep it tilted for more than 30 seconds it will fall asleep and show white eyes.
If you hold the egg upright it will get cold (blue eyes) or get the hiccups (orange eyes). Tilt and holt to warm your egg up (yellow eyes) or tap on the egg to scare the hiccups away (yellow eyes). The egg play is a bit part of the fun.
What the Hatchimals Egg Eye Colours Mean
Yellow: Normal
Red: Upset
Green: Dizzy
Orange: Hiccups
White: Asleep
Pink: Cuddle
Blue: Cold
How to hatch the Hatchimals Wow
Next you will want to hatch your Hatchimals Wow. When your Hatchimals Wow is ready to hatch it will show rainbow eyes and play ready to hatch music. It didn't take too long for ours to be ready to hatch but the children were really impatient about it! Remember to remove the ribbon from around the egg before it hatches.
If you hold the egg upright it will hatch, tilt it to pause the hatch. You will hear struggling and cracking until the Hatchimals Wow pops out of the egg with a "Tada" and plays happy birthday music - A Hatchy Birthday!! . When the music is done you can remove the Hatchimals Wow fluffy llalacorn from it's base.
What the Hatchimals Wow eye colours mean
The Llalacorn has expressive eyes and the different colours all mean different things.

Flashing orange - hiccups

Sometimes you will find it in surprise moods so if you know how to get it into a better mood that is lots of fun.
How to play with the Hatchimals Wow
- Touch it's tummy
- Touch it's forehead
- Touch the back of it's head
- Pick it up
- Touch it's right toe
- Touch it's left toe
- Tilt and hold it
- Make a loud noise
How to make the Hatchiamals Wow grow
A fun part of knowing how to make your Hatchimals WOW work is knowing how to make it grow - it is quite a sight to see and the toy's main cool feature.
- Chase it to the top with it's fruit when feeding
- Tickle it's tummy
- Touch one of it's toes three times to make the Hatchimals Wow sink down. Tap one of the toes again to make it start growing again.
- Hypnotise it by holding the back of it's head and forehead at the same time, the eyes will turn pink. If you keep holding it the eyes will turn white. You can then make it grow by holding the back of it's head. Hold the tummy to make it move down again. When it reaches the bottom it will fall asleep. If you touch the back of the head and forehead at the same time again it will wake it from being hypnotised and it's eyes will go back to yellow.
How to make the Hatchimals Wow talk
Your Hatchimals Wow can record what you say and repeat it in a funny voice. Touch both feet at the same time to record, it's eyes will turn teal, let go when you want to stop. Touch one of the toes to hear your voice back. Touch it's forehead to increase the pitch and touch it's tummy to lower the pitch of the recording. See if you can make it hit a high note and low note.
How to feed the Hatchimals Wow
The Hatchimal Wow comes with a small size piece of plastic food (a confetti fruit accessory) which you can use to feed it. Hold the fruit against it's forehead and the eyes will turn purple. Now you can make it chase the fruit. Hold it against it's tummy and it will chase it downwards, hold it against it's forehead to chase it upwards. If you hold the fruit against it's forehead at the top it will start to munch on the fruit. When it has eaten enough it's eyes will turn yellow. If it eats too much it will get gassy (orange eyes). Tap it on the back of it's head to burp.
How to Tickle the Hatchimals Wow
Touch it's tummy quickly will give it a tickle and make it grow. If it reaches the top it will get hiccups (flashing orange eyes). If you make a loud sound with your voice for 2 seconds it will scare the hiccups away.
How to Scare the Hatchimals Wow
When it is quiet and you make a loud noise for more than 2 seconds you will scare your Hatchimals Wow and it's eyes will turn blue. You can pat the back of it's head to calm it down and return it's eyes to yellow.
How to pet and snuggle the Hatchimals Wow
If you pat the back of it's head you will make it coo and it's eyes will turn pink. Keep patting and it will say I love you or blow you a kiss. You can pick the Hatchimal Wow up and tilt it to snuggle. Pet the back of the head or forehead to make it coo. Tickle it's tummy to giggle and if you hold the back of it's head and hold it to your chest at the same time it will be a hug. Put it down to return to yellow eyes.
Other things you can do with your Hatchimals Wow
- Tilt it backwards and upright to play (yellow eyes). Do this too much and it will get dizzy (green eyes). Put it back down to return to yellow eyes.
- Sometimes it will start to sneeze and rise up and say "ahh ahh". Touch it's forehead to move it down. If you reach the bottom the sneeze goes away. If it reaches the top it will do a big sneeze.
- Play peek-a-boo. If you put the egg top on the top of it's head it's eyes will turn off and it will make curious sounds. Take the top off and it's eyes will light up and it will say peek a boo! Try tapping one of it's toes while the egg is on top of it's head too.
- Make it sing and dance - touch and hold it's tummy and toe for three seconds. Right toe for song 1 and left toe for song 2. While it is signing and dancing you can touch it's forehead to make it sing higher and touch a toe to make it sing lower. Touch it's tummy to pause and touch and hold it's forehead and back of the head at the same time to exit.
- Play Top Tap
How to turn off the Hatchimals Wow
If you leave your Hatchimals Wow alone for 30 seconds it will fall asleep. You can turn it off using the on/off switch on the base of the Hatchimal.
How to re-hatch the Hatchimals Wow
One of the cool things about the Hatchimals Wow is that it has a re-hatchable egg. Put the Hatchimals back in it's egg and do four actions....
- tilt it backwards and then hold it upright so it shows yellow eyes
- tap on the egg until it's eyes flash yellow
- tilt it backwards and right side up to play
- tilt it backwards and cuddle
When it is ready to re-hatch it will show rainbow eyes and hear the ready to hatch music.
All in all this is a really fun toy to play with. We did find it somewhat difficult to get it to do what we wanted to though. We found that it helped to have it on a solid, flat surface but it can be a bit frustrating to work properly. I think if you are happy just to play randomly with it you will be ok, but if you are determined to make it do what it is supposed to you might struggle.
You can buy the Hatchimals Wow from all good toy stores including Smyths, Argos and Amazon (affiliate links). It retails for £79.99 but I've seen it as low as £59.99 so do shop around. It comes in the pink llalacorn version as shown here or also a purple llalacorn too.
We've put together a little video showcasing all the tricks that the Hatchimals Wow can do - it really is good fun when you know what you are doing! As you can see though, it has a mind of it's own really, the biggest surprise is what it will do next! Make sure to give it a watch so you can see for yourselves how the Hatchimals Wow works.
