Pop Blast Review and Giveaway: Fun Foam Ball Blasters for Kids

Finding a toy that keeps children entertained for more than a few minutes can sometimes feel like quite an achievement. Finding one that gets them moving, laughing and playing together is even better!

My children recently tried the Pop Blast foam ball blaster from Wicked Uncle, and they absolutely loved it. They played with these for hours, inventing different games, setting each other challenges and generally burning off plenty of energy.

They are wonderfully simple to use, require no batteries and fire soft, lightweight foam balls. This means the children can get started straight away without needing complicated instructions or endless help from an adult.

What Is the Pop Blast?

The Pop Blast is an air-powered, pump-action toy blaster that fires lightweight foam balls.

To fire it, you simply load a ball into the barrel and use the pump action. The faster you pump, the more quickly you can fire. There are no batteries to install, no charging cables to lose and no complicated controls to master.

Each Pop Blast comes with 12 bright neon-yellow foam balls. The manufacturer states that the balls can travel up to 30 feet, making the toy suitable for both indoor and outdoor games. It is currently listed at £16.99, although prices may change.

Our First Impressions

The first thing that appealed to my children was how easy the Pop Blast was to understand. There was no lengthy setup and they did not need me hovering over them explaining what every button did.

They loaded the foam balls, worked out the pumping action and were playing within minutes.

The popping sound as the balls leave the barrel adds to the fun without being excessively loud. The bright yellow balls are also fairly easy to spot, which is useful when they inevitably end up underneath furniture or in the corner of the garden.

I particularly liked how lightweight the blasters felt. They were easy for the children to carry around, but they still felt sturdy enough to cope with enthusiastic play.

Simple Enough for Children to Use

Some action toys look exciting but turn out to be fiddly, frustrating or difficult for children to operate independently. That was not our experience with the Pop Blast.

The pump-action mechanism is straightforward and does not require much explanation. Once my children had used it a couple of times, they were able to reload and fire the balls themselves.

There are no batteries to run out halfway through a game, either. As a parent, I always appreciate toys that can be taken out of the box and enjoyed without first hunting through the kitchen drawer for batteries.

It also makes the Pop Blast a useful toy to take into the garden, on a family holiday or to a relative's house.

The Foam Balls Are Lightweight

One of my main concerns with any toy blaster is whether the projectiles will hurt when the children inevitably fire them towards each other.

The Pop Blast balls are made from lightweight foam. My children found that they did not hurt during their games, although we still introduced sensible rules about not deliberately firing towards anyone's face.

As with any toy of this type, children should follow the manufacturer's age guidance and be supervised appropriately.

The lightweight balls also make the Pop Blast more practical for indoor play than many harder projectile toys. You will still want to move anything particularly fragile, but the soft balls are less worrying than solid plastic ammunition.

Perfect for Sibling Challenges

The Pop Blast really came into its own when my children started creating challenges for each other.

Rather than simply running around firing the balls, they arranged cups and lightweight targets and took turns seeing who could knock down the most. This gave the game a little more structure and stopped it becoming too chaotic.

A few Pop Blast challenge ideas include:

• Cup Knockdown - Arrange reusable cups in a pyramid and see how many each player can knock over with a set number of shots.
• Long-Distance Target Practice - Create a target and gradually move it farther away each time a child hits it.
• Timed Challenge - Give each player 30 seconds to hit as many targets as possible.
• Points Game - Label different targets with points. Smaller or more distant targets can be worth more.
• Obstacle Course - Create a short garden obstacle course with a target to hit at each station.

These games are a great way to encourage children to take turns and practise their aim. They also add an active element, particularly if you spread the targets around the garden.

A Fun Way to Burn Off Energy

One of the biggest advantages of the Pop Blast is that it encourages active play.

My children were constantly moving as they collected balls, repositioned targets, ducked behind obstacles and created their own games. They were having so much fun that they did not notice how much energy they were using.

It would be a particularly useful toy during the school holidays, when children have plenty of time to fill and may be tempted to spend too long in front of a screen.

On a dry day, you could set up a full target range in the garden. During wet Welsh weather, a smaller version could be created indoors using cardboard boxes, empty plastic bottles or reusable cups.

What We Liked About the Pop Blast

There was a lot that worked well for our family:

• It is very simple to use.
• No batteries or charging are required.
• The foam balls are soft and lightweight.
• It encourages children to move around.
• Children can invent lots of different games.
• It works well for sibling challenges.
• It can be used inside or outside.
• The bright balls are easier to find than darker projectiles.
• It provides a fun alternative to screen time.
• The children were entertained for hours.

I also think the Pop Blast offers good play value. Although it is a simple toy, it can be used in plenty of different ways rather than having one fixed purpose.

Is There Anything to Consider?

The main thing to remember is that the balls will travel around the room or garden, so you may spend some time retrieving them from underneath furniture and behind plant pots.

It is worth agreeing on a designated play area and asking children to count the balls at the end of each game. A small storage bag or box would also help to keep all 12 foam balls together.

Children should be reminded never to aim at faces, pets or anyone who is not taking part in the game. The manufacturer lists the technical age recommendation as eight years and over.

Our Pop Blast Review: The Verdict

The Pop Blast was a definite success in our house.

My children absolutely loved playing with these and stayed entertained for hours. The toys are simple enough for children to understand quickly, while the pump-action mechanism and satisfying pop make them exciting to use.

From my point of view, the lightweight foam balls were a big advantage. They did not hurt during play, and I felt much happier about the children using them than I would with harder projectiles.

They were particularly good for sibling challenges. My children enjoyed creating targets, competing for points and thinking up increasingly elaborate games.

Most importantly, they were laughing, moving and playing together rather than asking for a screen. For an uncomplicated toy that helps children burn off some energy, the Pop Blast is well worth considering.
