    Why make your own crayons

I'd seen how to make your own crayons on Pinterest and YouTube and my daughter was desperate to have a go. It is actually really easy and a lot of fun, and of course you can play and draw with the finished crayons.

This DIY  is super easy and great for kids as it gets them thinking about colour combinations and mixes and you can encourage them to be creative and get drawing with their finished crayons. It really is a winner of an activity. You can use bought crayons for this, or it is also a great way to use up broken ends of crayons and save wasting them.

    What you will need

A silicone mould - here are some great ones on Amazon...

Some crayons. Broken ones from home are perfect or you can buy cheap crayons in the pound shop or online here.

    How to make crayons

Place the mould on a baking sheet. This is important as silicone moulds are wobbly and you want to be able to transfer it to the oven without spilling it!!

Peel the paper from the crayons and break them into small pieces. Add the pieces to the mould in colour combinations that you think would look good. We did a couple of random ones, a rainbow one, a black, white and grey one, and shades of colours. You want the crayon pieces to really fill up the mould as they will melt down to fill in any gaps.

Then pop the filled tray into the oven, about gas mark 6 for 10 minutes but keep a really close eye on it and remove it when all the crayon has melted.

When removed give the mould a gentle tapping for a minute to bring any air bubbles to the surface. Leave to cool then pop the shapes out of the mould. Not only do they look really pretty but they are great to colour with as different edges give a different colour so they make some funky looking pictures. I think these also make great gifts, either wrapped up as a set or popped into party bags.
