I have always wanted to play an escape rooms game, but with having young children and no childcare I've never made it to one. I was delighted to find out that you can get escape room games for home so that I could join in the experience without leaving the comfort of my own home. These escape room games from Epic Escapes are perfect for playing with older children or if you have friends over. It would make great New Year's Eve entertainment and something handy to have in case another lockdown hits - so you can entertain yourself at home.
Disclosure - we were given this game free of charge for the purpose of this review. All opinions are honest and our own.
What is in the box?
Epic Escapes is an escape room game in a box. The box comes with three games inside - so three escape rooms in one box. If you look after all the materials you can pass the box onto a friend when you have played all three games. The contents of the box are really great quality - wooden boxes and metal padlocks for example. It's the kind of set that can be passed on again and again.
Shortly you will also be able to buy expansion packs for ยฃ29 each meaning you can extend the life of your game several times over.
How it works?
You will need one person to set up the room. The instructions on setting up are very clear so they are easy to follow. This person won't be able to play the game obviously as they will know where the clues are hidden. The rest of the party then have 60 minutes to follow the clues, solve the puzzles and unlock the padlock to escape the room. Bear in mind that you will only have 3 attempts at the lock before you are locked in forever!!
Game Play
We played the game as a family and we chose the easiest game to play first - Crime. I set up the room and Daddy, E (14) J (10) and J (7) played the game. They were really excited to find the clues and help to solve them. My youngest (7) was too young to really understand how to solve the clues but he was brilliant at finding the hidden ones in the room so he still managed to stay involved. Daddy is normally very good at games like this but even he struggled with this one and it was only with a big clue from me that he got the code to the padlock in just over an hour.
We thoroughly enjoyed playing this game and we are looking forward to trying out the next two - although a little daunted as the easiest game wasn't exactly easy! I thought it would be a bit boring to be the one who sets up the room and not play but it really wasn't - it was fun watching them hunt out clues and trying to work things out!
