One minute it’s all cartoons and superheroes and the next it’s pop music and computer games. Kids grow up fast! So, creating a bedroom that won’t quickly lose its coolness is a tricky thing to do. But there are ways to create a modern kid’s bedroom that is also maintainable and will keep them happy for years.
Love the walls
If you’re going to create a lasting impression on the bedroom, it’s a good idea to get the walls sorted. If they’re in bad shape, it’s no good simply covering them up. It’s better to start from scratch and make everything good as new. Get those walls freshly skimmed with new plaster, before going any further.
And keeping the walls painted rather than papered, could avoid lots of wallpaper stripping and repapering in the future. It’s far better to paint the walls in a light colour, so it’s easy to paint over as tastes change.
Keep the floor neutral
Floors need to take a lot of wear, so you’ll want something durable for the bedroom. But it also needs to be kept clean and be able to fit in with future redecoration. So, you may be scratching your head about how you can achieve this. Don’t worry, it is possible!
Neutral colours are popular in modern homes and there’s a good reason for this, as they work with so many colour palettes. However, if you’re going for carpet, you’ll need to make sure it’s possible to clean it. Some carpets are stain-resistant but a carpet that you can get professionally cleaned is going to stay looking good for longer.
If you’ve got wooden floorboards in good condition, it may not be necessary to lay a new carpet. Floorboards are a flexible option with staining and painting providing lots of ways to keep it looking fresh. Natural or white floorboards will work well over time as they’ll blend into lots of kids’ bedroom styles, although they will need touching up from time to time.
Choose a strong bed
Kids’ beds are available in so many shapes and sizes these days, but some are going to last longer than others. So, check what they’re made from and how they’re held together. Thin laminate or veneer is going to look shabby pretty quickly. Well-made wooden furniture is usually more expensive, but it could last a lifetime. And if you’re going to buy a new bed, make sure it’s full size. Otherwise, they’re going to grow out of it!
A final note
To create a modern kid’s bedroom like this will be quite expensive initially. Especially with the cost to plaster a room, buy new furniture and lay new flooring. But the maintenance and changes needed as your child grows will be much less. So, with careful planning, you could save money over time.
