You don’t need a huge budget to make the most of your garden – nor do you need to hire a landscape gardener to do it for you.
There are relatively quick and easy things you can do to make it a space you enjoy spending time in on a hot, sunny evening and ultimately could add value to your home when the time comes to sell. Did you know that a well-maintained garden could add 20% to your property value? Surely, that is reason enough to dig out the spade!
So, here are a few ways you can make the most of your garden on a budget, no matter what size it is:
Clear away the weeds
Simply tidying up your garden could make a huge difference – start by pulling up the weeds, cutting back the bushes and mowing the lawn. Then take a look at your garden furniture, shed and fence – is the paint faded or peeling? If so, give them a lick of paint – stick to brown varnish or add a splash of colour – this can be as bright or as subtle as you wish. The most this will cost you is the price of a tin of paint – but it will make a significant change to the space.
Create a wildlife friendly space
Another small cost, that will completely transform your garden, is to make it wildlife friendly. While the space will come alive with birds tweeting in the trees, and butterflies fluttering around flowers – you will be benefitting them as much as they you.
In the spring and summer – when they have extra mouths to feed - you will make this quick and easy for them. Likewise, in winter, when food, water and shelter is harder to come by, you will provide them with everything they need to survive the colder months. Of course, you could buy these from the shop, but as you are on a budget – why not make it yourself from recycled materials? Again, it can be as simple or creative as you would like.
Decorate Your Bin
Bins are unsightly and take up a significant amount of space especially if you only have a small garden, but they are a necessity and they could actually work to your advantage. Have you considered covering them up with a sticker? Take a look at these ones from Bakker - you could choose your favourite flower, a garden scene, or perhaps something a little different.
Grow Your Own
Growing fruit and vegetables can be done in the smallest of spaces and while it won’t cost you much to grow you can will also save on the weekly shopping bill because rather than filling your trolley with carrots, apples and tomatoes – you can pick them from your garden.
It takes very little time, money or effort to make the most of your garden, so get outside and enjoy the weather this summer while making it a space you can be proud of.
